Tributes, Dedications, and Rememberances2000Here's what some previous guests had to share about Marty!
Jan 4, 2000 - 13:25 - From: cal
I was only two when Marty died, but he is the greatest performer of
all time to me. My father was a travelling "singing cowboy" in his
youth, and I grew up hearing about Marty Robbins, whom my dad
apparently had met in his travels and had gotten to sing with him.
My father had nothing but good to say about Marty, and wanted me to
listen to his music. About ten years ago, I bought "Gunfighter
Ballads and Trail Songs," and from that tape I bought and learned
how to play a guitar and have been singing his songs ever since.

All my life I remember my dad telling me stories of how he met and talked to Mr. Marty Robbins. I love to sing along with his songs. The breath control, timbre, his voice had a rich quality that is beyond compare. When he passed away in December of '82, I was devastated because I wanted to meet Marty Robbins as my dad had.
As long as I have his songs to listen to, I'll carry his memory along with that unfulfilled wish I made as an 11 - year old girl.

I came to know Marty Robbins through my dad. My parents came from (what is now) the Czech Republic, and my dad, in particular, shares the same fasination and fondness for the American Old West that a lot of Europeans do. He asked me years ago if I could find lyrics for him for some of Marty's songs. With English as a second language, he had always wanted to see Marty's words in writting to make sure that he understood them. So finally, I decided to look for those lyrics and that's how I found this site and I thank you for for it. In reading some of these tributes, I was struck by how many others linked Marty's music with memories of their past. The music of Marty Robbins was familiar to me after years of my dad playing it but it wasn't until recently that I started to listen to him - as much for the quality of his music as for a type of connection to my youth and my dad. In a way, Marty is as familiar and comforting as the house I grew up in. Next time I'm home, I think I share a beer with my dad and put in one of my Marty Robbins CD for us to listen to.

I had been a country DJ about a year in 1970 when I was sent to do an
interview with Marty. He was my first BIG star, and one of my personal
Idols. I was very nervous and Marty knew it. He put his hand on my shoulder
and calmed me down, and my very first interview for Radio went smoothly
and it was the beginning of hundreds of interviews. Thank you Marty, I owe you!

I met Marty in the early 60s near Norfolk while in the Navy. He stayed to sign autographs after the show and one thing shows the kind of man Marty was.Two older women were in the group of about 10 people and one of them was blind. Her sister asked if Marty would let her sister touch him to see if he looked as she thought he did.I will never forget the thrill the woman had on her face while Marty stood there with his arms around her hugging her as she ran her hands over his face.He laughed and joked and kissed her showing to me the genuine love and caring Marty had for everyone he met. Ill never forget that scene and it made me an even bigger fan than I had been before.A wonderfull person and great entertainer.Thank you for this site and for allowing me to share my story.

Not many people know this, But several weeks before Martys death, He accepted JesusChrist as personal Lord and Saviour! He was led the the Lord by the great evangilist Dr.Carl Hatch in a restaurant in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Praise the Lord! He knew he needed salvation as much as all the rest of us. It was good for Marty Robbins and its good enough for me!

As a young child, my Dad used to play all the greatest of Marty Robbins' hits. Now, at the age of 27, I coincidentally heard a Marty Robbins songs whilst opening someone's homepage on the internet. Since then, I have totally rediscovered his music. Listening to it now is different, as a child I didn't comprehend the English language. I have found that not just the sound, but the depths of his lyrics really move and encourage me to listen. I would now love to see him live, go to a concert or so... Unfortunately he died when I was only 9 years old. It is good to see, though, that his legend lives on...

I am 55 now, and have been a Marty Robbins fan all of my life.
Well most of it anyway. I was fortunate enough to see Marty in concert
after he had that accident in Charlotte N.C. When he hit the wall at
160 mph. When he came to Spokane, Wa, he was still moving very slowly
and sitting down extremely easy. Also that night I got to see Merle Haggard
on the same show. I have always referred to Marty as "Golden Throat". \
I believe that Ralph Emery first called him that. Even with a broken
tail bone, he put on a wonderful show. He walked out on stage and grabbed
hold of the mic, and we heard a loud snap from the mic. Marty let out
a whoop and hopped all around the stage. When he came back, he said
"See how hot I am." He had the most wonderful personality I have ever
seen. I loved every song he ever did, but I think one of my most
favorites of his was "San Francisco Teardrops." Marty is the one singer
that I think gave everything he had to his music and fans. A lot of the
singers gave a lot, but I don't think anyone gave more to us than Marty
did.

Back in the mid-sixties I was playing with a road band in Oregon. At one show we were to open for several Nashville acts, one of which was Marty. During our show I sang Red River Valley, when walking off stage someone grabbed my arm. It was Marty Robbins, he looked me in the eye and said "you're lucky I wasn't planning on singin' that one tonight. Then he got the warmest grin on his face. Something I'll remember. Thanks for this page...

I regret that I only ever got to see marty in concert two times. However, I will
forever be thankful for those times. Both concerts were at Sunset Park in West
Grove, PA, in 1981 and 1982. I had loved him for many years before that, but those
were the only chances I got to attend his concerts. He gave all to the fans, not
only onstage, but off. The crowds were huge and the autograph lines were long. Yet,
he stayed out there as long as the people would wait for him to sign autographs.
Sunset Park had 2 shows each Sunday--one at 3:00 in the afternoon, and 1 at 8p.m. The 8p.m. 1982
show was wonderful, as were all of Marty's shows, but I was told later, that Marty did not feel well at
all. No one would have known this at the time. He went backstage while Don Winters and Bobby Sykes sang a
few numbers. I was told by the park owner that Marty sat on the couch and was visibly ill. The park owner
told him to just cut the show short, because risking potential heart problems wasn't worth it, and the fans
would understand. Marty told the park owner that no, he was going to go out there and finish the show. He felt he
owed us that. That incident just proved what a wonderful person he was; yet it makes one wonder that if he did this type of thing
often, it may have accellerated his heart condition. Maybe if he'd have taken it easier, he'd still be here today.
We'll never know, but again, I am thankful for all the memories of Marty I have. I am so lucky to have seen and met him and I hope
I will meet him again someday.

Marty had a Unique, Marvelous Voice. I always did like Marty. My Sister, Cindy, lived in Nashville, for a long time. She had the pleasure and privilege of sitting in on one of Marty's Recording Sessions, and best as I recall, also had Breakfast with Him and Ronnie(his Son). My Sister at the time had been dating Ronnie some. Marty commented that my Sister looked much like his Daughter. My whole Family enjoyed Marty's wonderful Talent, for many years, prior to his Death.........Norma Draper

Well hello there Marty Robbins fans!
I can't even begin to tell you how much I love this honourable web site of Marty Robbins. Kristy thank you ever so much for placing such a great web site on a man who has given us so much. Marty Robbins certainly means a lot to me and his words and his songs are so beautiful. I am 16 years old now and I have been a Marty Robbins fan all my life.
I was born on September 16th 1984 in Sri Lanka. That is where all of our family comes from. In 1989 we moved to Canada where we lived for 6 years before coming back again in 1998. In 1996 we moved to England for 2 years and then finally in 1998 we moved back to Canada for good I hope!
As a boy I loved listening to country music so much. In fact Marty Robbins was one of the first people who really got me started! I will never forget that the very first song I heard Marty sing was "Elpaso"!Oh, after I heard that song I was hooked into Marty's music. I thought that they way he sung was really something else! I loved it so much, believe me. I started buying Marty's CD's and now I have 4 of them. The CD's that I have are "A Life Time Of Song 1951-1982", "Gun Fighter Balads And Trail Songs", "16 Biggest Hits" and "Super Hits". Now are there any box sets of Marty Robbins? If there is please let me know!
I can play the piano like the great Floyd Cramer. I love Floyd's style so much. I started playing the piano when I was 3 years old, but now I'm quite an expert at it. I can sing as well and I love singing Marty's songs.
Now I have said this before and I'll stick to it. Marty Robbins, Jim Reeves and Eddy Arnold have the most beautiful voices in country music! There will never be a Marty Robbins again! If anyone out there who sounds like Marty Robbins, persue it! We need someone like you to come along oneday like Marty! It is such a shame that Marty Robbins died in 1982, it really is too bad because if he was living today he would have sold out more concerts! My Father is the one who told me all about Marty Robbins and that is how I became a fan of him. My Father is also a fan of him too. His favorite song is "Devel Woman".
Well it has really been a pleasure visiting this web site Kristy. If anyone would like to send me anything of Marty Robbins, my address is:

Thank you everybody for keeping Marty Robbins's music alive and thank you so much for the tributes. It means a lot to us and we enjoy hearing great stories about him. So take good care everyone and please Email me or write to me any time you like.

Like all those who have already written here, I would like to state that this is a nice tribute to a legend. My first memories of Marty Robbins were in the early 50's. I grew up listening to Marty Robbins, Webb Pierce, Hank Snow and all the Real Country Singers. The ones who went through the hard times. The ones who without, there wouldn't be any good times. Those who made Country and Western Music what it is. Believe it or not I liked Marty Robbins before El Paso. In 1960 our house burned. We lost all the Records we had. I slowly built my collection of Marty back. I delivered Grit Newspapers and saved for weeks to buy a new Marty Robbins Album. I grew up in New England and it was about impossible to find a record by him in the stores. I had to send away for them. In 1974 I lost them all again. I started over and have a pretty good collection of him now. I still have the original album I bought of him in 1961 with no scratches or skips. Still sounds great. I only say all of this to give a little background on the way I felt about Marty's singing. In 1980 I moved to Nashville and started doing heating and air conditioning work. I had never met Marty or seen him perform. Imagine how I felt when I received a call to go to his studio and repair the air conditioner. I met and talked with Jim Farmer and repaired the A/C. A few weeks later I received another call about the main A/C. Again I didn't get to see Marty as he was on tour. That time I left a note with the invoice asking Marty when he made the checks out if he could make out two of them. One for one dollar and one for the balance. When I received payment there were two checks in the envelope. One was for one dollar the other for the balance. They were signed Martin David Robinson. I still have the one dollar check, signed with his real name in a frame with his picture. It hangs in my living room. How many people are there who would take the time or go to the trouble to do something like that. How many of the new stars would have even bothered to read the note. Through the next year and a half I was at his studio and his office several times. He was never there. I left some 45's one time. The next time I went back he had autographed them for me. He left several messages for me. I like to think that with his sense of humor he got a kick out me leaving all the stuff for him to autograph and when I would get by to pick it up he would be out of town. I received a call from Carol at the studio one day. She told me Marty had left something for me. Two t-shirts. These shirts were tickets to get into the first annual Marty Party. After all these years I was finally going to meet him. At the time I had 2 children aged 2 and 6 months. We made arrangements for a baby sitter. The night of the party the baby sitter didn't show up. By the time we had located someone else it was too late to go. I never met or saw Marty Robbins but he remains a hero to me till this day.
I am sorry this is so long but I wanted people to know he wasn't just a great entertainer. He was a great man. Just like he always wanted to be remembered.

My name is Raymond Williams.I am a professional singer & entertainer.I live my life on the road driving from town to town singing for a living.I normally do not take the time to respond or participate with web sites, but the comments on this site have nearly moved me to tears & I felt that I had to put in my 2cents.I am only 33 years old yet I have loved & respected Marty Robbins music my entire life.Although I was raised listening to,& watching marty,I must say that I never learned true respect for his music untill I started performing for a living.I sing all types of music, but if you want to see a room full of people stop what they are doing & truly give undivided attention, sing a Marty Robbins song. But you cant just sing it,it won't sound right.you have to feel with every part of your physical, spiritual & emotional being.A lot of people say that I sound just like marty.the truth is I dont, but I give every thing I've got when I sing one of his songs.I guesse that's why people think I sound like him,& believe me doing Marty's music takes all you have.it drains you!I can truly understand, after learning to sing his songs, what marty gave.HE GAVE ALL.I'm sorry this is so lengthy, but I believe marty was the greatest of all time,& to explain it takes more than just a few words.I only hope some day that my career will allow me to share my heart & soul with a vast audience as Marty did
With all my heart,

And out in San Angelo, Utah Carol dreams of becoming a Running Gun. Mr. Shorty is trading his short barrelled bad .44 for a Big Iron, sold to him by a Cowboy in a Continental Suit. Marty Robbins took us there in song, everytime. He had that ability to paint a picture in ones mind and heart. I met Marty the first time in Norfolk while I was in the Navy.
I had just done what I considered a passable rendition of Devil Woman accompanying myself on my battered old acoustic. Marty came over and gave me some tips and told me that I would be better off with electric top do some of the licks I was trying.
A few years later at a NASCAR race I saw him again and he actually rememebered me, I was very impressed, but I had to give him the sad news that my left hand had been very badly hurt in a car accident shortly after I met him the first time. He seemed genuinely sorry.
Due to my career at the time I met many performers, Marty was always the most personable.
I cried the day I heard of his death.
Jim, just an old roadie and wanna be.

The fact that Marty Robbins' music takes me back to my childhood like no other artist probably doesn't seem strange - except that I grew up in Jamaica. When I hear "Big Iron" it reminds me of being five years old (25 years ago) begging my father to play it over and over. Wonderful songs - all of them.

My name is Vicki and I've known Marty Robbins since I was 12 years old, but didn't get to meet him until I was 21 when he was in Miami, FL where I lived at the time. From the moment I met him and became part of his "magic" I was taken in by Mr. Teardrop who still holds a special place in my heart even today, on this the anniversary of his 75th birthday (Sept. 26, 2000).
Every concert I attended was exciting and Marty always made his fans feel part of the show. I would sneak backstage at the Grand Ole Opry just to get a pictures made with Marty and he loved it! I was fortunate enough to call him my friend and even today his son, Ronny, and I remain friends and keep in touch.
From time to time our local radio station will do tributes to Marty and with the help of Ronny and myself and the listeners just go crazy over some of the songs they play.
I remeber the day of Marty's funeral it was pouring down rain in Nashville, TN and I told Ronny that the angels in Heaven were crying for our loss here on earth, but that our loss was Heaven's gain and I look forward to seeing Marty in that wonderful place one day.
There are so many memories that just won't die....but I just wanted to share some of mine. Thank you.

Nothing that I had ever heard sounded anything like 'El Paso' the very first time I heard it played on the radio. The images it conjoured up for a 16 year working in a grimey wharehouse in south west London in the early '60s' are with me to this very day. That was the start of a love affair with the music of Marty Robbins that is as strong today as it was all those long years ago. What a fantastic boost it was given when a couple of years back I discovered the offerings Bear Family Records had of Marty's recordings with the re-issue of all those wonderful songs of Marty's that had been re-mastered and issued on CD. Some of the re-mixes are outstanding and in my opinion deserved to be released as singles. I had never heard a song called 'Billy Venero' until I got the 'Under Western Skies' boxed set and the lyrics "Sharp and clear a rifle shot, woke the echoes of the spot" must rate as some of the best Marty ever sang, and there were very many of those. Be Good, Be Kind, Be Careful. Mike PS The late great Johhny Horton ran Marty a very close race regarding my favourite singer!

Marty Robbins was absolutely the best singer that ever walked God's green earth. I always watch for any of his very old albums I don't already have. Nobody will ever be able to match his voice again. He was a very great loss to us who loved him so much.

I,m an Aussie fan of Marty,s I believe that this man has contibuted a great deal to story telling with his music. I reckon he is one of the greatest performers of all time. It is a pleasure to look at this site, knowing there are still people out there that will let his memory live on. Congratulations...... What about Marty,s son he is also a very good performer, I have managed to keep "Laura May" for years. keep up the good work.

You will find another dedicated fan here. He was/is my favorite country/WESTERN entertainer of all time. His voice had a range, richness and emotion that still astounds me every time I hear it. I even have his Hawaiian CD, which I love. Some of your E-Mail asks wherecan they find these great M.R. songs. I have had considerable luckwith 'Heartland Music'. Additionally, I am a Karaoke Nut and have had moderate success here in my little corner of S.Cal. doing my best to try and emulate his beautiful sound. Next month will find me doing a Karaoke showcase tribute to Marty at a local night spot. Marty, thank you for all you've done for me personally and continuing to warm my heart every time I hear your music. "SARGE"

I was lucky enough to get to see Marty when I was 15 or 16 years old, i had loved his music since my mom had me listen to him sing Singing The Blues. I just fell in love with him, he was so nice and so special. everyone says the reason i married my husband was because he looked like Marty. I don't know why he had to die so young, he seem like such a great guy.

I really enjoy reading these tributes. I must admit to getting a lump in my throat with most of the life stories about this Greasest Ever Entertainet, the one and only Marty Robbins.
This is without doubt one of the best Marty sites on the web, the other is Helen's Marty Robbins Page

I also know Kristy & Helen are very good friends and they are both dedicated Marty believers and work tirelessly at their endeavours.
Congratulations to both Ladies.
